Donna Young's Homeschool Resource

Have you been to DonnaYoung.org? She has an abundance of resources for the homeschooling family.
You can find everything from printable planners to handwriting worksheets. I would recommend bookmarking her site.

About DonnaYoung.org

Donna Young started this web site in 1998. She was teaching her children at home, had bought a new internet capable computer, and decided to put her homeschool and household files online. Aside from a few donated files, Donna makes all the content for donnayoung.org using several programs such as drawing programs and word processors. Most of all, this website is a place on the internet from where you may print homeschool plannershousehold plannerscalendarshandwriting lessons, printable worksheets or papers for several subjects. DonnaYoung.org has grown over the years and continues to grow. Meanwhile, Donna's children have graduated from home school and life goes on.

See The Light ~ Free DVD offer

Art is one of those subjects that often gets pushed to the back burner of our homeschooling. Even though I love art, I couldn't draw a stick person to save my life. I have sent my children to art classes, but it's difficult to take them to all of the extra curricular activities and have you seen what some people charge??! Well, last week I received a free sample copy of See The Light DVD art classes. We watched them today and they are wonderful. I love that she uses basic supplies, incorporates truth from the Word, and the best part..... we don't have to leave the house! You can purchase the whole 9 volume series containing 36 lessons for $99.99. See The Light is still offering a free sample DVD. Go here to request yours. Enjoy!

Kid's Workshops

We love going to these workshops. I like to let my older kids try to do the project on their own. This gives them a chance to work on following directions. If they skip or alter a step their project won't turn out just right. I'm hoping this is teaching them to pay closer attention to directions.

You can make this window birdhouse at Lowe's on April 23. The birdhouse sticks to your window so you can actually see the nest. Pretty neat. Sign-up here.

Home Depot will be offering this planter/basket on April 2. This looks like a fun spring project. I'm picturing it filled with herbs in little terra cotta pots. Find all the info here.

Future Christian Homemakers ~ Lesson 1

Update: Future Christian Homemakers is now charging for their e-book. We will no longer be using this material as our guide, but their lessons are wonderful. The moms in our group will now determine what we cover in each class. I will continue to post about our lessons here. Enjoy!

Lesson one is all about eggs! You can find lesson one here.
Some things we made sure to cover were:

  • Wash your hands before cooking
  • Pull your hair up, nobody likes hair in their food
  • Wear an apron to keep your clothes clean
  • Cracking eggs
  • Beating eggs
  • Egg safety & salmonella
  • Washing dishes and clean up
Beating egg mixture

The girls enjoyed making french toast. We fancied up the recipe a bit by adding vanilla and cinnamon. We also used homemade bread. Yum! They served the french toast with orange wedges.

Clean up time!

Teaching girls to become successful homemakers

Update: These lessons are no longer free :(

I have spent this past year looking for a home economics course and was SO happy when I discovered Future Christian Homemakers! Their FREE lesson plans include cooking, cleaning, and sewing. Did I mention they're free? My daughter is working through the lessons with a small group of girls and their mamas. They have had so much fun cooking together and serving their delicious creations to their siblings. Would you like to join us on this journey of teaching our daughters to become successful homemakers? Please meet us here twice a month, starting Saturday, as we follow along this path together. You can find the first lesson, Cooking with Eggs,  here.

5 Dollar Dinners has some great garden planner printables available. I can never remember when I planted certain things or when they were ready for harvest. The Garden Harvest printable will solve this for me! I just have to remember to fill in it. She also has a garden planner, square foot gardening, and container gardening printable.

Craft Time

Here is an quick and easy craft to keep little ones busy for a bit.

I used some left over crumpled up tissue paper and white copy paper to make a counting craft project for my little one. I wrote out the numbers 1-5 and drew the appropriate amount of circles for each number. The idea is to paint glue on the little circles (fine motor skills) and glue the crumpled tissue paper in each circle (counting practice & number and color recognition). Big sister also had fun getting to play teacher for a while.

Homemade Playdough

I came across this playdough recipe the other day and decided to give it a try. It's the best playdough recipe I've tried. You can add in food coloring, spices, glitter, or extracts. We added 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and some glitter to ours. I wouldn't recommend adding the spices if you have little ones. My 2 year old thought it was food. It did smell like a cinnamon roll.

Homemade Playdough
 1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 T. vegetable oil
1 T. cream of tarter
1 c. water
Mix all ingredients together in saucepan. After you've mixed them together turn heat on medium high and cook, stirring constantly, until dough forms into a ball. Remove from heat and knead until smooth. If the dough is too sticky you can knead in a little more flour. Store in a covered container or plastic bag.
